This website is run by the author who writes as Emsworth Jones ("we", "us"). This page explains what personal information we collect through mathatar.com, why, and what you can do about it. Questions go to hello@emsworthjones.com.

What we collect

  • Beta-reader applications. When you apply to be a beta reader we receive your name, email address, the reader's age, anything else you choose to tell us, and your confirmation that you agree to how we use these details.
  • Messages you send us. If you contact us about school visits, talks or anything else, we receive your name, email address and whatever you include in your message.
  • Website analytics. Squarespace, which hosts this site, collects basic information about visits, such as pages viewed and the type of device used, and uses cookies to make the site work.
  • The cuneiform tools. The names and numbers you type into the cuneiform tools stay in your browser. They are not sent to us or stored.

Why we use it

  • To run the beta-reader programme: sending the manuscript, asking for feedback, posting a signed first edition and, if you agree, naming you in the acknowledgements (your consent, which you can withdraw at any time).
  • To reply to you and arrange school visits, talks and events (to take steps you have asked for, or our legitimate interest in answering enquiries).
  • To keep the website working and understand how it is used (legitimate interest).

We never sell your information, and we only share it with the services that help us run things: Squarespace (website and forms) and Google Workspace (email). If we post you a signed copy, we will ask for a postal address at that point and use it only for that.

Children

Mathatar is written for readers aged 11 to 14, and young readers are welcome as beta readers. If the reader is under 16, a parent or guardian must fill in the form and give their own contact details, and we will deal with the parent or guardian, not the child. We only use a young reader's details for the beta-reader programme. A parent or guardian can ask us to delete a child's details at any time.

How long we keep it

We keep beta-reader details until the programme has finished and signed copies have been sent, and normally no longer than two years. We keep enquiry emails for as long as we need them to deal with your request and any follow-up, and normally no longer than two years.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask to see the information we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, object to how we use it, or withdraw consent. Email hello@emsworthjones.com and we will reply within one month. If you are unhappy with our answer you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Cookies

This site uses the cookies Squarespace needs to run, plus analytics cookies where you allow them. You can change your choice in the cookie banner or your browser settings.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will update this page and the date at the top.
